It’s always an odd but welcome event when my Rocket Kapre work overlaps with my day job. When arriving at the Batasan Complex yesterday morning, I was pleasantly surprised to see the Science Explorer Bus in the driveway. It turns out that the Traveling Science Centrum Exhibit of the Philippine Science Centrum was at the Batasan for a three day stint, with installations and workshops aimed at imparting to children a love for the sciences (or at least for weird spherical objects).
And what better guests to bring when visiting our present political overlords than our future overlords? Yes, robots were in the house (or, in this case, the House).
This is Larry Labuyo, who helped Team Lagablab (students from the Philippine Science High School) nab the “Highest Rookie Seed Award” and “Rookie All-Star Award” at the 2009 FIRST Robotics Competition.
Meanwhile, this robot with the rather recognizable glasses is called–you guessed it–Pnoy, a tourist robot who (along with students of Dr. Yanga Colleges Inc.) brought home the gold medal at the 7th World Robot Olympiad held here last month.
I managed to get a bit of a demonstration of both robots while speaking with Nerissa, one of our student delegates to the recent robot Olympiad, as well as Ruby, the chief of the Department of Science and Technology’s–*deep breath*–Science and Technology Manpower Education Research and Promotions Division (STMERPD).
I’ll upload those videos as soon as I can and make another post, but in the meantime, if you’re in the Batasan Complex area and have some free time, come on down. The exhibit is slated to be here until Thursday, so you have another day to come pay obeisance to Skynet.
