Children’s Books for Typhoon Relief: Tinda-Tindahan, Kuwento-Kuwentuhan

Posted by Paolo Chikiamco On November - 28 - 2013

It’s a time for giving — both because of the season, and because of of the dire need of those affected by Haiyan/Yolanda — and there are not many better gifts than books, especially for a child, and most especially when the proceeds of the sale all go to UNICEF, which is active in relief efforts. The Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY), Kuwentista ng mga Tsikiting (KUTING), Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK), and Adarna House are holding a kidlit books, art, and collectibles sale + storytelling sessions on Saturday. There will also be meet and greets with favorite authors. Please head on over if you can!

In an effort to contribute to on-going relief and rehabilitation endeavors, the children’s literature community in the Philippines is coming together to raise more funds for the survivors of typhoon Yolanda.
Join us on Nov. 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Raya School Gym, 109 Sct. Fernandez corner Sct. Torillo, Brgy. Sacred Heart, Quezon City for the following activities:
* Sale: Rummage through and purchase books, artwork, collectibles, and other previously-loved items. Or drop-off your previously-loved items to sell and donate.
* Meet & Greet Sessions: Grab the opportunity to chat with your favorite authors and illustrators. Get your books signed and your photos taken with them.
* Storytelling Sessions: Listen to beloved children stories read aloud by storytellers, authors, illustrators, publishers, and theater actors. Or even volunteer to read some of these stories aloud.
Also brought to you in cooperation with Anvil Publishing, Lampara Books, Flipside Publishing, Halo Halo Books, Tahanan Books, Samahang Pilandokan, and many more, all proceeds of Tinda-Tindahan, Kuwento-Kuwentuhan will be directed to UNICEF Philippines.

“A Secret Map of Shanghai” by Victor Ocampo, on Strange Horizons

Posted by Paolo Chikiamco On November - 19 - 2013

Getting fiction published in the acclaimed magazine, Strange Horizons, is quite the feat, and today Victor Ocampo joins the other Filipino authors who have made the cut. Victor’s new story, ”A Secret Map of Shanghai“, is now up on the Strange Horizons website. Victor says:

“Its about a May-Dec affair between a young Chinese City God and his Imperialist Western teacher. The story uses poetry as a motif, contrasting imagery from Classic Tang Dynasty Poetry with Rudyard Kipling’s “A White Man’s Burden”. By the way, its very sexual, R-16, so the language may be inappropriate for younger readers.”

Two horror anthologies are launching at the end of November. “Horror: Filipino Fiction for Young Adults”, edited by Dean Francis Alfar and Kenneth Yu, and a print edition of “Demons of the New Year”, edited by Karl de Mesa and Joseph Nacino, both launch officially at5PM on November 29, 2013 at the West Wing Gallery of the Vargas Museum in UP Diliman. Drop by if you have the chance!

Authors for the Philippines: Your Name in Slammed!

Posted by Paolo Chikiamco On November - 18 - 2013

Hi everyone! My contribution to the awesome Authors for Manila Typhoon Yolanda relief auction is now up. If you, someone you know, would be interested in having your name as a character name in Slammed! (my Interactive Fiction wrestling novel from Choice of Games), now’s yoour chance! Bidding ends Wednesday, 8PM GMT. No amount is too small (or too big!), so please help me spread the word (and check out all the other awesome items for bidding while you’re there — over 400 now!)

ITEM: Your name in Slammed!, the Pro-Wrestling Interactive Fiction Game by Manila-based author Paolo Chikiamco.

DETAILS: I have an interactive fiction piece/app that is already out, but if you help us get some aid to my countrymen, then via the magic of app updates, I can put your name/a name of your choice into the game in a variety of ways:

* I can add your real first name and surname to the list of possible options for player characters in Chapter 1.
* I can add a wrestling name of your choice to the list of possible options for player characters in Chapter 1 (just don’t ask me to put in a real pro wrestler’s name).
* I can change the name of one of the supporting characters (if you’ve played the game, the man or woman who are tormented with your former wrestling coach in one of the branches of the game) to your name.

Updating the first Mega Mythspace Mondays post now that we have the official covers for all three of the new issues we’ll be rolling out at this Saturday’s Komikon. The Finale of Lift Off! Bros Magkalas is dead… or, at least, he should be. Instead, he has an alien artifact in his chest, and power beyond his wildest dreams. But will that be enough to dake down the battleship of a Laho warlord, even with the help of some unlikely allies?

Only one way to find out…

The Philippines has just been hit with what may be its worst natural disaster in recorded history. There are many better places that are aggregating relevant / useful links, but for what it’s worth, here are a few I found:

Rescheduled: Filipino Reader Con moved to December 7

Posted by Paolo Chikiamco On November - 8 - 2013

Because we are currently in the path of the BIGGEST STORM EVER-EVER (very slight exaggeration), it’s been deemed best to move the Filipino Reader Con, originally slated for tomorrow, to December 7 — same place, the Ateneo de Manila Rizal Library. This will allow people to focus on hunkering down for the storm and/or worrying about friends and family in the more direct path.

Here’s the official announcement. Stay safe and see you all on the 7th!

Hello everyone!

After keeping track of weather news and current conditions here in the Metro and in nearby areas, we’ve decided to postpone the Filipino ReaderCon 2013 to December 7. Venue will still be at the Rizal Library. As I said, although we would’ve loved to keep things on track, we believe it’s in everyone’s best interests that we stay at home on Saturday, Nov. 9, and batten down our hatches, literally and figuratively.
On the bright side, December 7 will give us more time to prepare the things we have to prepare or polish the things we already have.
We hope to see you all on December 7, but in the meantime, we will be keeping all our marketing activities, online and off, active to build towards the new date. And we will stay in touch with each group regarding the new arrangements.
We apologize for this unfortunate turn of events, but again, thank you for supporting the Filipino ReaderCon. We hope we all stay safe against the storm.
Best,
Filipino ReaderCon Core Committee
